Welcome to the 2010 Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships!

Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) is proud to be the title sponsor of this world-class event and to have our orthopaedic and sports medicine practice, Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas, serve as the official medical team for cyclists and staff.

For those of you not familiar with GHS, we are a not-for-profit academic health system committed to medical excellence through research, education, clinical expertise and advanced technology. With five campuses and 1,268 licensed beds, our university medical center is one of the Southeast's leading healthcare providers. Our vision is to transform health care for the benefit of the people and communities we serve; and we do this by living our mission to heal compassionately, teach innovatively and improve constantly.

Participating as title sponsor of this event reflects a long-standing commitment to total health. At GHS, we strive to provide the right care at the right time and in the right place for our patients. We want to encourage healthy lifestyles by educating the public about eating and living well, but most of all, we want to help people get fit and be active. The 100 professional cyclists participating in the national championships event this September 18 and 19 are some of the most physically fit people in the world. But you don't have to be a professional cyclist to join in the fun. A great way to be active and also give back to the community is through the Stars and Stripes Challenge, in partnership with the Palmetto Peloton Project (P3). This fundraising ride takes place in conjunction with the Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships and raises money for cancer research.

GHS' Cancer Center was a recipient of funds raised through last year's Stars and Stripes Challenge ride and is honored to be a recipient again this year. We are grateful for P3's support of cancer research, which offers hope of new treatments and approaches for people in our own community as well as those around the globe.

After the fundraising ride Sunday morning, please drop by our health and wellness expo, located on Main Street. In addition, on Sunday afternoon, we are truly honored to partner with the US Handcycling Federation. This year, more than 50 handcyclists from across the country will participate in the Roger C. Peace Hospital-Rehabilitation US Handcycling National Criterium Championships.

This weekend promises to be fun and exciting for the entire family. We invite you to grab your bike and pedal downtown for the big event!

Sincerely,

Michael C. Riordan
